Umbi merupakan satu organ dari tumbuhan yang merupakan modifikasi dari organ lain dan berfungsi sebagai penyimpan zat tertentu (umumnya karbohidrat). Organ yang dimodifikasi dapat berupa daun, batang, atau akar. Bentuk modifikasi ini biasanya adalah pembesaran ukuran dengan perubahan anatomi yang sangat jelas terlihat. Umbi biasanya terbentuk tepat di bawah permukaan tanah.
Organ penyimpan tidak harus berbentuk umbi. Beberapa jenis tumbuhan menyimpan cadangan energi pada organ yang sama, tetapi tidak mengalami banyak modifikasi bentuk, sehingga tidak membentuk umbi. Tumbuhan memerlukan cadangan energi karena ia tidak bisa berpindah tempat untuk menemukan sumber energi baru atau untuk membantu reproduksi jenisnya. (SUMBER : WIKIPEDIA).
